Concrete floors have become very popular offering many advantages such as durability, versatility and easy maintenance.  They are long lasting and can survive under high traffic conditions.  Concrete slabs also make a good sub-floor for laminate floors, tile, linoleum, carpet and other applications.  Essential for a new slab or the repair and/or reconditioning of an existing floor is surface preparation.

Surface preparation equipment is used to polish or grind concrete surfaces or to remove previous treatments.  If your job requires leveling uneven joints or surfaces, eliminating trip hazards, or the removal of coatings, adhesives or mastics – then a concrete grinder is the tool you need.

When choosing a concrete grinder, the first thing to consider is what you are planning to use it for and the size of the job you will be doing.  Let’s take a moment and look at the different equipment rental options for preparing or grinding a concrete surface.

Surface Grinder

Surface Grinders:  Concrete floor (surface) grinders are used for applications such as grinding or cleaning concrete surfaces, leveling uneven joints & removing epoxies, high spots, mastics, thin-set & urethanes.  We offer a full line of grinding tools & conventional attachments including Grinding-Stones, Dyma-Serts and Strip-Serts to meet your surface preparation needs.  Surface grinders work well for light grinding or cleaning of concrete surfaces.  If you have a significant amount of concrete to grind (say more than ¼”) you’ll have to make several passes with the machine.  If the dual-headed concrete grinder is too big, consider renting a 16” heavy-duty floor machine with the grinding attachment that uses the same attachments as the dual-headed floor grinder.  The 16” floor machine also has a sanding attachment as well as a scrubbing brush attachment for cleaning a floor.

Scarifier

Scarifier

Scarifier:  A scarifier is a surface preparation machine that will clean, texture, level, groove, and remove material from concrete flooring.  Scarifiers remove concrete faster and more aggressively than surface grinders as they use the pummeling action of multi-tipped cutting wheels, or flails, that rotate at high speeds to chip away at the concrete surface.  Keep in mind that scarifiers leave a rougher finish.  If you need a smooth finish you will need to use a concrete floor grinder to achieve it.

Teq-Edge Floor Grinder

Teq-Edge Floor Grinder:  The Teq-Edge floor grinder is a very versatile surface grinder that uses an 8” diamond disc to grind the concrete.  The Teq-Edge is designed to get into tight or hard to reach spots, including being able to grind up to the edge of a wall.  The diamond disc allows for fast grinding of uneven slab surfaces, removing excess surface material, leveling patches of plastic overlays or grout and feather-edging sidewalks, gutters and similar surfaces.

Hand Grinder

Hand Held Grinders:  These are ideal for small jobs like areas close to walls and other hard to get places.  They are also ideal for removing blemishes to concrete work.  They are very light and easy to use.  Our hand held grinders can be outfitted with either 4” or 7” abrasive grinding wheels or with a 5” silicone carbide grinding cup stone.

Safety First:  Please remember that all cement products contain sand.  When that substance is released in the air, as will happen when using a power tool on concrete, the operator of the machine will breathe it in if a dust mask or respirator is not worn.  Concrete dust can cause long-term health problems for the operator or anyone else who breathes it.  Always wear a dust mask or respirator and safety goggles to protect your eyes and lungs from the dust that will be released by the removal process.
